![]() ![]() No one, neither Squad nor we, do deserve that KSP1 fades quietly into the night, and going out "with a bang" is better in that sense. that's huge, from a marketing perspective.įinally, this is a game with a heavily involved community. Not the entire staff, but even if you just have one person now who's job it is to create one video every week. Sure, it's been getting a little bit better lately (and probably because they've already absorbed Squad staff) but now they can likely dedicate people to keeping the hype around the game alive. T2 has been struggling with providing regular updates on new features of the game. These are people who don't need to be brought up to speed on "Kerbal Kulture." They can hit the ground running in regards to understanding what the game and its culture is about. This prevents the ones you want to keep from jumping ship. ![]() There's little doubt about the viability of the KSP1 product once KSP2 hits the market and your best staff will jump before that. Preventing a "brain drain" of talent you'd otherwise lose. If the game isn't producing that much revenue anymore, why not put the resources in a place where they can generate the same amount of interest - or perhaps even more - towards KSP2?Ībsorbing the KSP1 staff has multiple advantages: I wouldn't be surprised that we'll see a steady stream of videos and imagery to keep us updated on KSP2 development from now on, as a replacement for the ongoing KSP1 development. The marketing part is that the new KSP1 releases do keep interest in the game alive, but maybe the resources involved in that could be utilized better at this point. KSP is a niche game and never produced (by T2 standards) huge amounts of money to begin with, and certainly doesn't in the phase it's in now. It's hard to say if there's sarcasm involved in the above statement or not. As soon as creative leadership on KSP2 and Take Two saw that they can make a much bigger game with better general appeal, this trajectory was set. It's entirely possible that ST leadership would have caused same amount of time lost following renegotiation.īottom line, I don't think 2022 release was avoidable regardless. And that's under assumption that there weren't problems with how ST was managed to begin with, which is purely a benefit of the doubt at this point. We might have had a bit less delay if things could be worked out with ST, but we're talking 6 month difference at the most - likely less. Somebody clearly was only thinking about cold tactical advantage and not how that's going to look from outside, which is always a mistake if you're running a public company.īut from perspective of KSP2, fallout from rescoping the game would have been roughly the same. Even if they were forced into a position, the response was crappy and I can guarantee impacted decisions of some smaller studios to work with T2/PD in the future. T2 did handle communication on it horribly, though. It was definitely about money and politics more than anything, and I don't know which side was ultimately unreasonable. As for Star Theory not making that game, well, that one's harder to place. Delivering scope of KSP2 we're actually getting on that time scale and with that size studio was flat out impossible. If I had to point a finger at one person, I'd probably "blame" Nate Simpson for the delay, but I also think we're getting a much better game as a result, so it was probably the right move. We're getting a very different game than what was supposed to ship in early '20. It could have been Star Theory's fault, or a combination of both companies. The idea that Take Two were the ones in the wrong is the go to for a lot of people. Update: Also it's that console updates are coming also in 2022 so either they're released together or like in KSP1 it'll be released several months later, and if they're BOTH coming out in one year then that means SOMETING is coming early on.Īnyways those are my thoughts what do you think? Edited Jby Minmus Taster They wouldn't just leave this HUGE money making game franchise collecting dust for over a year without any new content, that's just bad marketing. KSP ending is a telltale sign that Squad/Intercept are ready to move on from the first game and within the next few months they will probably ramp up the promotion for the second game, with a release in early 2022. KSP2 is almost (and by almost I mean still at least a half year) ready, my reasoning? If KSP is getting finished up and if Squad's KSP team is really is moving to KSP2's team and looking to past examples of video game sequels if KSP is ending then guess what that means? So a lot of people are sad about how KSP is getting the axe being wrapped up, but this is actually in a way INCREDIBLE news!
